Our ancestors who settled these mountains struggled to survive and gave up an easier life in order to live in this beautiful setting. There were gatherings with much food and fun, there were quilts and coverlets made to nurture and delight the need for color and creativity, there was woodcarving, weaving, chair caning and the hills rang rich with the beautiful music of all kinds of instruments, as well as voices that sang with joy both in church and elsewhere. Teaching “the ole’ ways” is a way to give you a taste of days gone by. We must never forget our history and those who came before. Our Quilt Exhibit will be in its 3rd year and it will be hard to exceed the exquisite collection of 2008. Classes scheduled for August 2009 Heritage will be put on the calendar, as they are scheduled. Keep checking back to find out about those classes and times.
Join us each Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for Winter Pickin”. Musicians from all over the area come to The Art Center to Jam. The public is invited to join the fun. There is no charge for these weekly events. The music is rich, the companionship warm and the feeling is like a Sunday afternoon gathering. The fun begins October 2nd and will continue through April 30th, 2009. There is no greater heritage in these mountains than the music that echoes in the hills and hollows.
